Manassas VA Real Estate, Manassas Area and Community Information
Just outside of Washington, D.C., is the small City of Manassas. The 10 square miles of homes, shops, and small town beauty create an environment which decidedly feels like home. Manassas boasts little more than 38,000 residents,and yet offers great restaurants and shops and boutiques.
Early settlers in the Manassas area lived in the village of Tudor Hall. The village was renamed Manassas Junction when trains from the Manassas Gap and Orange & Alexandria lines began traveling through the village in the 1850s. Two significant battles took place here during the Civil War. The First Battle of Bull Run was fought in 1861, and the Second Battle of Bull Run was fought in 1862. The area was heavily damaged by these battles, and residents worked hard to restore it after the end of the war. The town of Manassas was founded in 1873, and Manassas was named as the Prince William County's seat during the 1890s. It became a city in 1975.
Parks and Recreation
Manassas offers residents a lovely array of parks and recreational facilities to choose from. Families love parks such as Oakenshaw Park and Byrd Park which both have playgrounds for the kids to play on. Byrd Park offers up a picnic pavilion and softball fields for a day of fun in the park. Stonewall Park includes a soccer field, a recreation trail and playgrounds offering residents a little variety. A pool at the park is open during the summer. There are also multiple paths for walking and bicycling located throughout Manassas.
Attractions and Activities
History lovers will find several interesting attractions in the area. The Liberia Plantation is one of the historic sites in the Manassas Museum System. The plantation house was built in 1825 and is open for tours. Other historic sites in Manassas include forts that were used during the Civil War.
The charming and historic town also offers up an area known as "Old Town Manassas". In the historic district residents can shop in a number of eclectic shops, dine and visit an array of art galleries.
For a great night out residents residents attend concerts at the Hylton Performing Arts Center. The center is a critically acclaimed performance venue which often showcases both national and international performance groups.
There are many wonderful community events held throughout the year in Manassas. Manassas residents celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks and live entertainment at Celebrate America. The Brands, Brews and Barbecue Festival is held in September.
